For any organisation looking to protect data, there are many options and possibilities on the market. And one key question that organisations must ask is, should I use a hardware-based solution or a cloud solution?
Different organisations have different requirements and the benefits of one option versus another may be clear, however, as the ClearYolk solution is designed to be cloud-native, we’ve explored some of the benefits of going hardware free.
Why you should use a cloud-native backup solution.
No reliance on supply chain
Technology is well and truly a part of modern business operations. One of the major effects of this has been the reliance on specialist components such as micro-chips.
Throughout 2021, businesses and individuals have seen the direct impact that COVID has had as the production of micro-chips has slowed and a variety of ‘smart’ products are delayed.
With relation to backing up and protecting data, servers used in hardware-based approaches are being delayed; meaning delays in the ability to order new or replacement backup servers. A problem not faced with cloud-native (software) driven solutions.
Minimise risk posed by ransomware
Ransomware is one of the most well-known cyber-threats to organisations of all sizes and the risks can be catastrophic.
Something that is lesser known about ransomware, however, is that some strains of ransomware are created with the intention of targeting and disabling any backups stored on a local network. In the case of hardware-first approaches to backing up, backup servers can often be accessed from the network meaning that backed up data is at risk of also becoming infected by ransomware.
This could lead to a total inability to recover from a backup and increases the chance of a ransom needing to be paid. Something that is strongly advised against by the police and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).
On demand recoveries (streamed)
In the past, organisations have often seen the speed of recovery as a huge benefit of having a hardware-based approach to data protection. And while this may be a traditional benefit, it no longer sets hardware-based solutions apart from cloud solutions. ClearYolk’s approach to data management and protection utilises InstantDataTM, a technology which allows for on-demand streaming of data, ensuring that unlike traditional approaches a full recovery does not need to take place before data can be accessed.
No heavy CAPEX investment
Traditionally, protecting data can be expensive, especially for organisations with larger data sets and cumbersome disaster recovery strategies.
The true benefit of a cloud-native approach to backing up and protecting data is that there is no need to invest in expensive infrastructure. Cloud-native approaches give flexibility of choice, enables organisations to protect as much or as little data as they would like, scaling rapidly as they grow and benefiting from reduced bills when data volumes reduce.
